(October 10, 2007 - Insidermedicine) This week, we focus on Dr. John Bell, who is trying to develop new treatments for cancers using viruses to infect cancer cells. Dr. Bell is a senior scientist with the OHRI for cancer therapeutics, and a Professor at the University of Ottawa.
He is also a co-founder of Jennerex Biotherapeutics, a company that is developing a new class of targeted cancer treatment products called 'oncolytic' viruses.
We spoke to Dr. Bell about his research, and the concept of viral therapeutics in cancer treatment. He described how all cancer cells are not created equally, and touched on the concept of a cancer stem cell. Dr. Bell also discussed which cancers were being addressed, and the various stages of viral therapeutics research around the world. And finally, Dr. Bell discussed the potential of viral therapeutics on cancer treatment as a whole.
I'd like to congratulate Dr. Bell for being selected to appear on Insidermedicine's In the Spotlight.
