Walking helps elderly maintain mobility
Walking helps elderly maintain mobility (May 27, 2014 - Insidermedicine) From Maryland - A new report published in JAMA finds that physical activity helps the elderly maintain their mobility, even among those who are frail. Researchers studied over 1,600 sedentary elderly individuals between 70-89 years old. Participants were able to walk a quarter mile within 15 minutes, but were at risk of losing that capability. They were followed for 2.6 years after being randomized to either strength, flexibility and balance training or health education and stretching classes. After three years, researchers found that this moderate physical activity helped these older adults maintain their walking ability at an 18% higher rate than those who did not exercise at all.
