Stress in adolescence may be linked to mental illness in adulthood

(January 17, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Baltimore - According to a report published in Science, stress in adolescence may be associated with mental illness in adulthood. Researchers studied two groups of mice--healthy rodents and those genetically predisposed to mental illness. Both groups took turns being socially isolated from the other during adolescence--a way to simulate stress in the rodents. They found that isolating the healthy mice had no effect on their behaviour, but that isolating the genetically predisposed rodents resulted in the mice demonstrating symptoms of depression and hyperactivity. Only with the addition of stress did these rodents exhibit these symptoms.
