Stem cells may have potential in treating Lou Gehrig

(January 10, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Italy – A new report presented at the annual meeting for the American Academy of Neurology finds that stem cells may have potential in treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Researchers studied an animal model of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), injecting the rodents wit h neural stem cells taken from a human. Results showed that the stem cells migrated to the spinal cord and successfully multiplied. As a result, the mice had a significantly extended lifespan and a 15% improvement in their neuromuscular function.
