Ranibizumab for diabetic macular edema improves visual function (August 27, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From Australia - Ranibizumab treatment for patients with diabetic macular edema improves visual function, according to a report published in JAMA Ophthalmology. Researchers studied over 300 patients with diabetic macular deem. Participants were randomized to either ranibizumab plus sham laser, ranibizumab plus laser, or sham injections plus laser. Injections and sham injections were given for 3 months and then as needed, while laser and sham laser were given at baseline and then as needed. Participants had their visual function assessed at 0, 3 and 12 months. Results showed that the ranibizumab plus laser group showed the greatest improvement in their visual function, followed by the ranibizumab only group and then the laser only group.
