Pneumonia much more likely with influenza infection
Pneumonia much more likely with influenza infection (June 27, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From Michigan - Risk of pneumonia increases dramatically with the flu, according to a report published in Science Translational Medicine. Researchers created a computer model that analyzed various hypotheses regarding influenza infection and pneumococcal pneumonia transmission. After examining epidemiological reports--including weekly records of pneumonia hospitalizations over a ten 10 year period--researchers found that individuals infected with influenza had a 100-fold increased risk of pneumococcal pneumonia. This increased risk lasted up to 7 days following infection.
