Milk and supplements are main source of vitamin D in children

(January 15, 2013 - Insidemredicine)

From Toronto – Cow’s milk and supplements are the biggest determinants in a child’s vitamin D levels, according to a report published in JAMA Pediatrics. Researchers studied blood samples from nearly 2,000 children under 6 years of age. The children were all part of a study in which they were tracked from birth. Results showed that the two factors that were most strongly associated with vitamin D levels were the use of daily supplements and drinking at least two cups of cow’s milk a day. Both of these factors played a bigger role than sun exposure and skin color.

We spoke with Dr. Jonathon Maguire, MD, principal investigator of this study, who offered some further insight.
