Mammograms every two years is as effective as yearly screening

(February 5, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From California - Mammography screening every two years is as effective as yearly screening for older women, according to a report published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Researchers reviewed data on over 140,000 women between 66 and 89 years of age. Nearly 3,000 of the women had breast cancer. They found no difference in the rates of advanced breast cancer among women screened annually or biennially. Nearly 50% of women aged 66-74 who were screened annually had false positives, whereas only 29% of women screened biennially had false positives.
