High cholesterol in early adulthood linked to heart disease later in life
High cholesterol in early adulthood linked to heart disease later in life (January 28, 2015 - Insidermedicine) From North Carolina - A new report published in Circulation finds that high cholesterol in early adulthood raises risk of heart disease later in life. Researchers studied data on nearly 1,500 adults aged 55 years, who were taking part in a long term study dating back to 1948. Researcher identified how long the study participants had high cholesterol and followed them for 20 years. Results showed that, at age 55, nearly 40% of participants had high cholesterol for at least 10 years. Their risk of heart disease was 16.5% over the next 15 years, nearly 4x the rate of those without high cholesterol. Every additional decade of high cholesterol increased risk of heart disease an additional 39%.
