High blood pressure drug may reduce risk of dementia

(January 7, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Hawaii – A new report presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting finds that beta-blockers may reduce risk of dementia. Researchers studied nearly 800 elderly men who had taken part in a long term study. Autopsies were performed after the participant’s died. Over 600 of the men had high blood pressure and were taking medication for their condition.

Results showed that all types of medications taken were better for the brain than no treatment at all. Men who were only taking beta-blockers for hypertension had significantly fewer brain abnormalities than those taking other medications or no medication at all.
