Elevated estrogen levels while pregnant may raise risk of breast cancer in daughter

(April 9, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Washington – According to a report presented at the AACR’s annual meeting, elevated estrogen levels during pregnancy may raise risk of breast cancer in the child. Researchers compared DNA methylation profiles of daughters exposed to high estrogen levels in the womb to data on breast cancer patients taken from the Cancer Genome Atlas. They found that the tumor suppressing gene, BRCA1, was silenced by DNA methylation in the daughters of women with excess estrogen levels during pregnancy. These results suggest that researchers may be able to identify which women are at higher risk of developing breast cancer.
