CT scan increase in children may increase prevalence of cancer
CT scan increase in children may increase prevalence of cancer (June 10, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From California - Increased rates of CT scans among children are expected to increase prevalence of radiation-induced cancer in the future, according to a report published in JAMA Pediatrics. Researchers studied seven US healthcare systems, finding that CT scans in children under the age of 5 doubled from 1996-2005, while CT scans among children 5-14 tripled over the same time period. Researchers estimate that nearly 5,000 future cancers could be caused by these additional scans. Researchers also estimate that reducing the highest 25 percent of doses to the median could potentially prevent nearly 50% of these cancers.
