Brain scans to predict cognitive decline
Brain scans to predict cognitive decline (March 11, 2014 - Insidermedicine) From North Carolina - A new report published in Molecular Psychiatry finds that brain scans can help predict cognitive decline. researchers studied over 150 adults over the age of 50. 69 of the participants had normal cognitive function at the outset of the study, while 50 had mild cognitive impairment and 31 had Alzheimer's. Participants underwent PET scans in conjunction with the radioactive dye florbetapir and were re-examined after 36 months. Results showed that those with plaque-positive scans at the outset of the study saw their cognitive abilities decline at a much greater degree than those with negative scans.
