As many as 180,000 deaths in 2010 cause by sugar sweetened beverages

From Boston - As many as 180,000 deaths worldwide may be linked to sugary drinks, according to a report presented at the AHA's Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism Scientific Sessions. Researchers used data from the 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study to estimate the effect that sugar-sweetened beverage consumption had on obesity and diabetes rates, and deaths due to obesity and diabetes. They found that nearly 25,000 deaths in the US in 2010 could be attributed to consumption of sugary drinks, and that countries that had the highest per-capita consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages also had the highest death rate due to consumption of these beverages
