Alcohol in early pregnancy linked to small babies, premature birth
Alcohol in early pregnancy linked to small babies, premature birth (March 10, 2014 - Insidermedicine) From the UK - Alcohol early in pregnancy may be linked to premature and small babies, according to a report published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Researchers studied over 1,200 women who were at little risk of birth complications. Participants were surveyed regarding their alcohol consumption in the first 4 weeks before conception, as well as in each of the three trimesters. 53% said they drank more than recommended in the first trimester and 40% said they drank over 10 units a week leading up to conception. Results showed that those who drank more during the early stages of pregnancy were at higher risk of premature birth and having a small baby.
