Weight loss surgery reduces diabetes risk factors

(June 4, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Minnesota - According to research published in JAMA, weight loss surgery can reduce several diabetes risk factors. Researchers studied 120 patients with high hemoglobin A1c levels, a BMI of 30-39, high C-peptide levels, and type 2 diabetes for at least six months. Participants were randomized to receive Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery plus lifestyle intervention, or lifestyle intervention plus medical management. The composite goal of the study was to lower HbA1c levels to below 7, lower LDL cholesterol to less than 100 mg/dL and to lower systolic blood pressure to under 130 mm Hg. After 12 months, results showed that 49% of the surgery patients reached this goal, compared to only 19% of those treated with lifestyle intervention and medical management.
