Individuals living near green space enjoy better health, particularly mental health, than those without green space near their homes, according to research published online ahead of print in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
Here are some facts about the relationship between green space and health:
• Psychological and mental health benefits can be obtained not only by enjoying nature in the countryside, but also by enjoying city parks and open spaces
• Spending time in green space can help reduce stress levels
• Taking a walk in a nearby park is a great way to get some exercise while enjoying nature
Researchers from EMGO Institute, VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam looked at the relationship between green space and health by analyzing the medical records of nearly 350,000 residents of Holland. The amount of green space near the homes of each of these residents was estimate based on their postal codes.
The investigators looked specifically at 24 different types of diseases. Among these, 15 were less prevalent among those living in environments with more green space within a 1 km radius than among those living near less green space. The relationship between green space and health was strongest for anxiety disorders and depression. It was also particularly high for children and those of lower socioeconomic status, both of whom tend to spend more time in or near the home. The relationship was also stronger in slightly urban areas and, in fact, disappeared among those living in highly urban environments.
Today's research highlights the importance of green space for health, particularly among those who generally stick close to home.
