Throat Cancer, Statins and Alzheimers, Kidney Cancer, Low Birth Weight

From Houston - Some researchers are calling for men to receive a vaccine that was developed for cervical cancer. This is because the HPV virus that is responsible for causing the majority of cervical cancers has also been implicated in cancers of the throat and mouth. A recent study showed that 72% of mouth and throat cancers are linked to Human Papillomavirus.
From Seattle - Statins, the popular drug that lowers cholesterol, may help prevent Alzheimer's disease. A recent study looked at the autopsy specimens of the brains of those on statins and compared them to those who didnt have the condition. The brains of those on statins had fewer plaques - the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease.
From Stockholm - Drinking alcohol may lower the risk for kidney cancer. According to a study of over 2,000 patients, those who drank 2 or more glasses of red or white wine- or the equivalent amount of beer- were 40% less likely to develop kidney cancer. The effect may be related to the anti-oxidants and anti-cancer properties in alcohol.
And finally from Denmark - A review of a large Danish database has noted an association between maternal exposure of a chemical found in non-stick pans and stain-resistant carpet spray to the birth of low weight babies. Babies who were exposed to high levels of perfluorooctanoate while still in the womb were 175 grams lighter.
