Some statins may raise risk of diabetes

(May 23, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Toronto - Some statins may raise risk of diabetes, according to a report published in the BMJ. Researchers studied data on 1.5 million adults, aged 66 and older. Participants had started statin therapy between 1997 and 2010, and were followed a maximum of 5 years following the initiation of statin therapy. Researchers found that patients taking atorvastatin were at 22% increased risk of new-onset diabetes, those taking rosuvastatin were at 18% increased risk, and those taking simvastatin were at 10% increased risk. Patients taking fluvastatin and lovastatin were both at small decreased risk of the disease.
