Simply sitting less could reduce type 2 diabetes risk

(February 28, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From the UK – Simply sitting less and moving around more can reduce risk of type 2 diabetes for those at high-risk of the condition, according to a report published in Diabetologia. Researchers studied 150 people from two diabetes studies, measuring participant's sedentary time and physical activity with an accelerometer. Results showed that, for patients at high-risk of type 2 diabetes, sedentary time had a negative impact on 2 hour glucose, HDL cholesterol and triacyglycerol—even after accounting for adiposity and physical activity levels. The researchers believe that simply reducing this sedentary time by 90 minutes a day could have a significant impact on the risk of developing diabetes.
