Sigmoidoscopy screening reduces colorectal occurrence and mortality
Sigmoidoscopy screening reduces colorectal occurrence and mortality (Insidermedicine - Aug 13, 2014) From South Carolina - Flexible sigmoidoscopy screening can greatly reduce colorectal cancer occurrence and rate of death, according to a report published in JAMA. Researchers randomized over 100,000 individuals to receive either once-only flexible sigmoidoscopy, once-only flexible sigmoidoscopy and faecal occult blood testing, or no screening at all. Participants were followed from 2001 until 2011. Results showed that, when compared to no screening, sigmoidoscopy screening reduced incidence of colorectal cancer by 20% and colorectal cancer mortality by 27%.
