Ritalin not connected to substance abuse problems in ADHD children.

(June 3, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From California - Ritalin does not increase risk of substance abuse problems in childhood ADHD patients, according to a report published in JAMA Psychiatry. Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 15 long-term studies, comprised of over 2,500 childhood ADHD patients taking Ritalin for their condition. Participants were followed from childhood until adolescence and young adulthood. Results showed that these children were no more or less likely to develop alcohol or substance abuse problems by the time they turned 20.
