Researchers discover way to target RNA tangles in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Researchers discover way to target RNA tangles in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (August 18, 2014 - Insidermedicine) From San Diego - Researchers may have found a group of RNA molecules that, when targeted with drug therapy, can limit the harmful effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), according to a report published in Neuron. The disease, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is marked by the development of lengthy RNA tangles, which in turn lead to neuronal death. Researchers found that the shape of the RNA tangles had a similar structure to another condition which they could successfully bind a molecule to to affect dysfunction. Researchers then examined cell lines from ALS patients, targeting these RNA tangles with two compounds. They found that this compound reduced the accumulation of RNA tangles in half, with no apparent toxicity.
