Prevalence of blindness, impaired sight has dropped significantly (March 24, 2014 - Insidermedicine) From Cambridge - Prevalence of blindness and partial sight has dropped significantly in the developed world, according to a report published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Researchers studied data from 1980-2012 on the rates of blindness and impaired vision in the developed world. Overall, they examined 243 studies. They found that over the 20 year study period, rates of blindness dropped from .2% of the population to .1%, and that prevalence of impaired vision dropped 38%. As well, researchers found that macular degeneration has replaced cataract as the leading causes of blindness.
