Prevalence and risk factors of diabetic macular edema
Prevalence and risk factors of diabetic macular edema (August 15, 2014 - Insidermedicine) From California - A new report published in JAMA Ophthalmology examines the prevalence and risk factors associated with diabetic macular edema. Researchers studied over 1,000 diabetic patients, aged 40 years and older, all of whom had valid eye photographs over a 3-year period. Results showed that odds of diabetic macular deem were higher among non-Hispanic black patients when compared to white patients, as well as among those who had diabetes for longer periods of time and had elevated levels of hemoglobin A1c. Overall, researchers estimate the national prevalence of the disease to be 746,000 people in the US population aged 40 or older.
