Overall smoking prevalence has decreased, but number of smokers has increased
Overall smoking prevalence has decreased, but number of smokers has increased (January 8, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From Washington - According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, though overall prevalence of smoking has declined globally, the number of smokers has increased. Researchers studied the global prevalence of smoking from 1980-2012. They found that prevalence of smoking among men declined from 41% to 31% over that time period, and from 10.6% to 6.2% among women. However, because the global population over 15 years of age has grown, there has been an increase in both male and female smokers--from 721 million in 1980 to 967 million in 2012.
