Nicotine patches not effective in helping pregnant women quit smoking (March 11, 2014 - Insidermedicine) From France - According to research published in the BMJ, nicotine patches are not effective at helping pregnant women quit smoking. Researchers studied over 400 pregnant women over the age of 18 years, all of whom were between 12 and 20 weeks gestation. Participants smoked at least five cigarettes a day, and tested the effectiveness of 16 hour nicotine patches compared to placebo. Results showed that the patches had no benefit when compared to placebo in stopping smoking.
