From Toronto - Morphine for children following a common surgery can be life threatening, according to a report published in PEDIATRICS. Researchers studied nearly 100 children between 1 and 10 years of age. Participants were randomized to receive painkillers at home following tonsillectomy surgery for sleep apnea. One group received morphine while the other received ibuprofen. On the first night at home, 68% of those taking ibuprofen had improvements in the oxygen desaturation levels. However, only 14% in the morphine group had similar improvements, with most having their condition worsen. One child even suffered life-threatening drug reaction from the morphine
