Mineral deposits in eye may play role in age-related macular degeneration (January 23, 2015 - Insidermedicine) From Maryland - A new report published in PNAS finds that mineral deposits may play a role in age-related macular degeneration. Researchers studied tissue samples from a group of elderly AMD patients. They used x-ray diffraction and fluorescent staining chemicals in their study. Results showed that the AMD samples contained tiny spherules mineralized calcium phosphate, known as hydroxyapatite. This is the first time the mineral has been identified in the eye
