Migraine with aura strongly linked to heart attack, stroke in women

(January 15, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From France – Women who suffer migraines with aura may be at raised risk of heart attack and blood clots, according to a report to be presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology. Researchers studied over 27,000 women for 15-years. Over 1,400 of the women suffered migraine with aura. Results showed that, after high blood pressure, migraine with aura was the second strongest contributor to heart attacks and strokes—ranking ahead of diabetes, smoking, obesity and family history of heart disease.

We spoke with Dr. Tobias Kurth, MD, principal investigator of this study, who offered some further insight.
