Mediterranean diet may counteract gene tied to risk of stroke
Mediterranean diet may counteract gene tied to risk of stroke (August 13, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From Boston - According to research published in Diabetes Care, the mediterranean diet may counteract a gene strongly linked to type 2 diabetes and reduce risk of stroke. Researchers studied over 7,000 men and women, randomizing participants to either a Mediterranean diet or a low-fat control diet. Participants were followed for nearly 5 years. 14% of the participants had a gene known to be associated with type 2 diabetes. Results showed that individuals with the gene variant who ate a low fat control diet were at 3x increased risk of stroke during the study period. Those with the variant who ate the Mediterranean diet, however, were at no increased risk of stroke at all.
