Lung cancer screening could save 12,000 lives a year (February 25, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From Atlanta – Screening for lung cancer in high-risk patients can save 12,000 deaths a year in the US, according to a report published in CANCER. Results from the National Lung Screening Trial found that low-dose CT scanning, when compared to x ray, could reduce lung cancer deaths by 20% among current and former smokers. Researchers used this trial, as well as data on the US population and lung cancer death rates, to estimate that approx. 12,000 deaths a year could be averted if current and former smokers were screened for lung cancer with this method
