High resting rate linked to risk of death, even in fit and healthy people

(April 15, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Denmark – A high resting heart rate is associated with a raised risk of death—even in people who are fit and healthy, according to a report published in Heart. Researchers studied 3,000 men taking part in the Copenhagen Male Study. Participants had their cardiovascular health assessed in 1971, 1985 and 2001. Nearly 40% of the men died by the end of the study. Researchers found that a resting heart rate of 51 to 80 beats per minute raised risk of death by 40-50%, and a resting heart rate of 81 to 90 raised risk twofold. Results showed that the higher the resting heart rate, the higher the risk of death—regardless of fitness level.
