From North Carolina – The human immune system has an innate ability to destroy HIV—when a gene is removed from the virus, according to a report published in PLOS Pathogens. Researchers ‘humanized’ a mouse model—giving the rodents a human bone marrow, liver and thymus tissues, meaning the rodents had no immune system of their own and instead had a fully functioning human immune system. Researchers then infected the rodents with HIV. They found that, after removing the viral infectivity gene (vif) from HIV, a group of proteins in the human immune system could effectively mutate the virus and completely kill it
