Gene variant nearly doubles risk of Alzheimer

(Aril 9, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From New York – A common gene mutation nearly doubles risk of Alzheimer’s disease in African Americans, according to a report published in JAMA. Researchers studied nearly 6,000 African Americans, 2,000 of whom were diagnosed with probable Alzheimer’s disease and 4,000 who were cognitively normal. Genome analysis revealed a variant of the ABCA7 gene, a minor variation in whites, that raised risk of Alzheimer’s nearly twofold in African Americans.
