Gene discovered that may predict which retinoblastoma in both eyes

(February 5, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Germany - A new report published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology finds a genetic mutation that may predict bilateral disease in retinoblastoma patients. The study involved more than 500 children with unilateral retinoblastoma, 15 of whom went on to develop metachronous bilateral retinoblastma. Results showed that nearly 23% of those who had the RB1 genetic mutation went on to develop bilateral disease, while all 155 children proven to not have the mutation remained affected in only one eye.
