Gene Mutation Linked to Cigarette Addiction, Premature Birth May Raise Risk of Autism, 8 Glasses of Water Per Day May Not Have Health Benefits

(April 3, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From Houston - Researchers have linked abnormalities in chromosome 15 to a tendency to become addicted to cigarettes and a raised risk of cancer. Smokers who had 2 abnormal copies of the gene had an 80% raised risk of cancer, and those who had 1 abnormal copy had a 28% raised risk. Another paper demonstrated that those with mutations were more likely to become addicted to nicotine.

From Montreal - Being born prematurely may raise the risk of developing autism. Researchers examined 91 premature babies, who were evaluated for early signs of autism once they were born. Autism-like behavior was seen in 25% of patients, but because many of the children were too young to be formally diagnosed, the study is ongoing and the children will be formally assessed as they get older.

And finally, from Philadelphia - After reviewing the literature, researchers concluded that drinking eight, 8oz glasses of water per day does not lead to health benefits. In fact, finding where the recommendation originated from was difficult. It was noted that drinking this amount of water was helpful in very dry environments and in those with certain diseases.
