Fluoroquinolone use linked to antibiotic restistance with keratitis

(January 17, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From India - Fluoroquinolones may be associated with worse outcomes from keratitis, according to a report published in JAMA Ophthalmology. Researchers conducted a randomized, double-masked placebo controlled trial on nearly 500 cases of keratitis. Participants were given moxifloxacin hydrochloride.  Results showed that those who reported use of fluroquinolones at presentation had a 2x higher minimum inhibitory concentration than those who did not report fluoroquinolone use. These results indicate that use of fluoroquinolones may predict antibiotic resistance.
