Family history of diabetes raises risk of prediabetes
Family history of diabetes raises risk of prediabetes (August 23, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From Germany - Having a family history of diabetes raises risk of prediabetes, especially in non-obese individuals, according to a report published in Diabetologia. Researchers studied over 8,000 non-diabetic individuals. Over 5,000 had normal glucose tolerance while nearly 3,000 had either impaired fasting glycaemia or impaired glucose tolerance--two forms of prediabetes. Having a family history of diabetes raised risk of either of these conditions by 40%. However, after adjusting for age, sex and BMI, results showed that family history raised risk by 26%. When adjusting for BMI, researchers found that this association was only present in non-obese people.
