Factors linked to frequent bevacizumab injections in DME patients
Factors linked to frequent bevacizumab injections in DME patients (July 19, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From London - A new report published in Ophthalmology examines the factors associated with frequent bevacizumab injections in diabetic macular edema patients. Researchers reviewed data on patients who received intravitreal bevacizumab as part of a 2 year randomized controlled trial. Results showed that eyes that had better baseline visual acuity were less likely to have persistent edema and as a result, less likely to have recurrences in the second year. All of the eyes that had subretinal detachment at baseline, however, had persistent edema in the second year. Researchers also found that a significant amount of those who had persistent edema in the first year went on to achieve a dry macula and gained many letters in their visual acuity. These results suggest that persistent edema during the first year of injections should not cause cessation of treatment.
