Common bacterial toxin linked to multiple sclerosis (January 29, 2014 - Insidermedicine) From New York - A new report presented at the 2014 ASM Biodefense and Emerging Diseases Research Meeting finds a link between a common bacterial toxin and multiple sclerosis. Researchers studied the effects of C. perfringens--a bacterial toxin among the most common foodborne illnesses in the US--on a mouse model. Results showed that the toxin targeted brain cells specifically associated with multiple sclerosis.
