Breastfeeding longer does not appear to prevent childhood obesity

(March 15, 2013 - Insidermedicine)

From Bristol – Breastfeeding duration may not reduce risk of childhood obesity, according to a report published in JAMA. Researchers studied nearly 14,000 mother-infant pairs, following participants from birth until a median age of 11.5 years. Participants were randomized to either a breastfeeding promotion intervention or to usual practices. Results showed that women in the intervention group had significantly increased breastfeeding duration and exclusivity. However, there was no major difference between the two groups in respect to overweight or obese children at 11.5 years.
