Biomarker predicts who will be at reduced heart attack risk from aspirin
Biomarker predicts who will be at reduced heart attack risk from aspirin (July 3, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From North Carolina - A new report published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology finds a biomarker than may predict who will respond to aspirin therapy.Researchers studied three groups of people--two comprised of healthy volunteers and one comprised of heart disease patients. The healthy volunteers received aspirin therapy for a month, while the heart disease patients were already prescribed low dose aspirin. Results of blood tests showed a set of 60 co-expressed genes that were consistently associated with insufficient platelet response to aspirin therapy. As well, this same set of genes were effective at predicting which patients would go on to suffer a heart attack or die
