Antibiotic linked to risk of heart death
Antibiotic linked to risk of heart death (August 22, 2014 - Insidermedicine)
From Denmark - A new report published in the BMJ finds that clarithromycin may raise risk of heart death. Researchers studied data on over 5 million treatment courses for adults between 40-74 years old. The study period ran from 1997 to 2011. Results showed that, after adjusting for risk factors such as age and sex and use of other medication, continuing use of the antibiotic clarithromycin raised risk of cardiac death by 76%, when compared to penicillin.
