Alzheimer's patients at reduced risk of cancer and vice versa
Alzheimer (July 10, 2013 - Insidermedicine) From Italy - Older people suffering from Alzheimer's disease are less likely to have cancer, and vice versa, according to a report published in Neurology. Researchers studied over 200,000 individuals aged 60 and older. Participants were followed for six years. Over the study period, nearly 22,000 people developed cancer and nearly 3,000 developed Alzheimer's disease. However, the total number of people who developed both was far less than expected--when compared to disease rates in the general population. Results showed that the risk of cancer in Alzheimer's patients was reduced by 50%, while risk of Alzheimer's disease in cancer patients was reduced by 35%.
