From Boston – According to research published in the American Journal of Public Health, alcohol consumption is a major contributor to cancer mortality in the US. Researchers reviewed national data on cancer death and alcohol consumption. They found that alcohol consumption was responsible for nearly 20,000 cancer deaths a year, or 3.5% of all cancer deaths in the US. Alcohol was linked to 6,000 breast cancer deaths a year, or 15% of all breast cancer deaths. Every death attributed to alcohol accounted for an average of 18 years of potential life lost.
