Handwashing, Vioxx Lawsuit, Reclast Reduces Fracture Risk, Inhaled Insulin

(September 19, 2007 - Insidermedicine) From Chicago - Americans are washing their hands less frequently. A study performed discreetly in public bathrooms showed a 6% decline in handwashing. While nearly 90% of women washed their hands, only 2 thirds of men did. Hand washing can prevent the spread of colds, flu, and other infections.
From New York City - New York City and New York State have joined a class-action suit filed against Merck, the manufacturers of Vioxx. The medication was pulled by the FDA 3 years ago because it raised the risk of heart disease. The city and state claim that the company withheld important safety data, and they are attempting to recoup tens of millions of dollars spent on the drug through Medicaid and drug-assistance programs for the elderly.
From North Carolina - A drug taken once per year may lower the risk of another fracture. Research on over 1000 patients with hip fractures showed that an infusion of Reclast lowered the risk of another fracture by 35%. The medicine, which was given once per year, also lowered mortality by 28%.
And finally from Amsterdam - Inhaled insulin may have a big impact on the diabetes epidemic. Inhaled insulin appears to control blood sugars as well as insulin injected beneath the skin. In addition, it may improve compliance -- recent research showed that nearly 25% of diabetics delayed taking insulin for up to 2 years.
